Toric Contact Lenses for Astigmatism
There are two main types of astigmatism: corneal astigmatism and lenticular astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism is the most common type and is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea. Lenticular astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of the lens inside the eye.
Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Glasses are the most common way to correct astigmatism, but contact lenses can also be a good option.
What Are Toric Contact Lenses?
Toric contact lenses are designed to correct astigmatism.
Toric contact lenses have a different power in two different meridians (directions) to correct the irregular shape of the cornea. This allows light to focus at a single point on the retina, resulting in clear vision.
Toric contact lenses are available in both soft and rigid gas-permeable (RGP) materials. Soft toric contact lenses are more common, as they are more comfortable to wear. However, RGP toric contact lenses may be a better option for people with severe astigmatism or who have difficulty keeping soft toric lenses in place.
Benefits of toric contact lenses:
- Clear vision at all distances
- No need to wear glasses
- More natural field of vision than glasses
- Improved appearance
