Myopia Management In A Nutshell

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common eye condition that affects children and adults alike. It is caused by the eye elongating, which prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina. Myopia is not a static condition; it typically progresses until the age of 20.

According to research, 34% of children ages 12-17 have myopia. This number is expected to increase to 5 billion people globally by 2050.

The increase in myopia is due in part to changing lifestyles, with children spending less time outdoors and more time focusing on close objects like digital screens.

Myopia progression can lead to serious eye diseases later in life, such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment and glaucoma.

The goal of myopia control is to reduce abnormal eye growth and elongation.

What Are MiSight Contact Lenses?

MiSight contact lenses are daily disposable soft contact lenses specifically designed to slow myopia progression in children. They are the first and only FDA-approved contact lenses for this purpose.

MiSight lenses have a unique design that combines two optical zones:

  • Central optical zone: The central optical zone corrects the child's refractive error, just like a traditional corrective lens.
  • Peripheral optical zone: The peripheral optical zone has uniquely designed concentric rings that direct light to focus on the retina. This has been shown to reduce the stimuli, causing the eye to grow longer significantly.

Safety And Effectiveness of MiSight Contact Lenses

MiSight contact lenses are safe and effective for myopia management in children. This has been demonstrated in a number of clinical trials, including a 3-year trial of 135 children aged 8 to 12.

In the 3-year trial, children who wore MiSight contact lenses experienced a 59% reduction in myopia progression compared to children who wore traditional soft contact lenses. This means that MiSight contact lenses can significantly slow the rate at which a child's myopia progresses.

MiSight contact lenses are also safe for children to wear. The most common side effects are mild and temporary, such as redness, irritation, and discomfort.
