Orthokeratology for Myopia Management
Is your child wearing glasses or contact lenses for myopia? Is their prescription getting worse every 12 to 18 months? If so, it may be time to consider ortho-k (orthokeratology) contact lenses.
Understanding Orthokeratology
Ortho-k is a non-surgical vision correction treatment that uses unique contact lenses to reshape the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) while you sleep. This allows you to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses during the day.
Ortho-k is also known as CRT (Corneal Reshaping Therapy), Gentle Vision Shaping System (GVT or GVST), Vision Shaping Treatment (VST), and Corneal Molding.
Ortho-k lenses are made of a rigid gas-permeable (RGP) material designed to reshape the cornea. When you wear ortho-k lenses overnight, they gently apply pressure to the cornea, causing it to flatten. This reduces the amount of light that is focused in front of the retina, which corrects myopia.

What is The Fitting Process?
At The Focal Point Optometrist, we believe that a comprehensive ortho-k assessment is essential for ensuring the best possible results for our patients.
During your child's ortho-k assessment, we will:
- Evaluate the health of your child's eye
- Determine the exact corrective prescription
- Measure the precise curvature of your child's cornea using a topographer
- Discuss your child's lifestyle and needs
- Answer any questions you have about ortho-k
Once we have completed the assessment, we will work with you to develop a personalised Ortho-K treatment plan. We will also provide detailed instructions and in-clinic training on inserting, removing, and caring for your child's ortho-k contact lenses.
After the initial fitting, your child must return for a few periodic check-ups. These check-ups will help us assess any changes in refraction and corneal topography and adjust the lenses accordingly.
Ortho-K Is An Investment For Lifelong Healthy Vision
By giving your child the gift of ortho-k lenses, you can improve their daytime vision while significantly reducing their risk of developing serious eye diseases later in life. The myopia control program at The Focal Point Optometrist offers the best chance of managing myopia and preserving your child’s eyes for a lifetime of clear, comfortable and healthy vision.
The Focal Point Optometrist serves patients from Wembley, Perth, Midland, Rockingham and throughout Western Australia.
