Glaucoma is a serious, progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve, the pathway that transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Often associated with high pressure inside the eye, Glaucoma typically develops slowly and can cause irreversible vision loss without any noticeable symptoms until the later stages.
Because Glaucoma initially impacts peripheral (side) vision, many people do not realise they have the condition until central vision begins to fail, which is why regular, thorough eye testing is critical.

Early detection is the key to managing Glaucoma and preventing significant vision loss. At The Focal Point Optometrist, a standard Comprehensive Eye Test includes several crucial checks to assess your risk:
- Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Measurement: We use advanced instruments to accurately measure the fluid pressure inside your eye.
- Optic Nerve Head Evaluation: We meticulously examine the health, size, and shape of your optic nerve head, using high-resolution digital imaging (often OCT) to track subtle changes over time.
- Visual Field Testing: This assessment checks the integrity of your peripheral vision, identifying any areas of sight loss that may be caused by early Glaucoma damage.
Management and Treatment
If you are diagnosed with Glaucoma, or if we identify you as a high-risk patient, we work closely with you and specialists to protect your remaining vision.
- Risk Stratification and Monitoring: We establish a rigorous schedule of monitoring appointments based on the severity of your condition and risk factors.
- Treatment Coordination: Glaucoma is most commonly treated with prescription eye drops to lower eye pressure. We coordinate your care and referrals with an Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) to discuss medical treatment, laser therapy, or surgical options if necessary.
